Re-Learning Architecture.

Deadline Submission: 09.02.2023
For the 11th edition of the international open air architecture film festival in the courtyard of the Architekturzentrum Wien in August 2023, we are looking for documentaries, short films and animations on Re-Learning Architecture.

Requirements for affordability, recyclability and a radical decarbonisation in the building sector will significantly reshape and change the practise of architecture in the coming decades. So, is it time to consciously re-learn architecture? Can questioning what we consider architecture to be move us to rethink architecture and space? The question of what architecture can do, and the way institutions should inform people about architecture are fundamental cornerstones for a sustainable future. How do we want to learn, teach and practise architecture in the future, confronted by a pressing need to change how we build. To what extent do basic design techniques, such as building on the existing substance, have to flow into the curriculum? What role do the users, architects and planners play in a systematic transformation of architecture and urbanism? How to be proactive? How to negotiate in an arena where the project phases from competitions to completion can stretch over years or decades? Are we building today based on the misjudgements of the recent past? Should we even still be building?

We invite filmmakers from all over the world to submit documentaries, short films and animations on the subject, to show critical perspectives of historical and contemporary developments. The festival presents topical themes from the realms of architecture and urbanism, and provides an opportunity for exchange and conversation in an outdoor setting.
