The MetroLab initiates an International Dialogue on Metropolitan Planning.
The International Dialogue on Metropolitan Planning, consisting of a four-part dialogue series, kicked off in fall 2020 with the first two MetroLab Forums on mobility and urban growth, followed by the third MetroLab DELTA in October 2021, and closing the series with PROGRAM on November 8 & 9, posing the question: Can metropolitan landscapes become resilient?
WHERE: Die Schöne – Kuffnergasse 7, 1160 Vienna
In the discussion with international and local experts from the fields of urban and regional planning, administration, political science and urban sociology, “What is the new role of metropolitan areas?” serves as a guiding question to get to the bottom of the challenges of cross-border cooperation in the Vienna – Wiener Neustadt – Bratislava metropolitan region. What constitutes the identity of this holistically considered area and what role do individual places and regions play in it? From which intra-regional synergies can sustainable spatial development benefit and what does this mean for the attractiveness and competitiveness of the metropolitan region?
In addition to the international lectures and the panel discussion, a city walk through Siebenhirten and Vösendorf will provide an in-depth insight into the interrelationships of regional cooperation and the identity of the (pre-)urban. The exhibition of the design projects that have been developed in the framework of the Urban Design Studio “MetroLab Delta + Program” in cooperation with the Institute of Urban Design (Vienna University of Technology) and a film evening will round off the two-day program.

19:00-20:30 Movie Night and Discussion (Gallery Die Schöne)
On the last night of the forum #PROGRAM a documentary film will be shown that deals with the transition of places of production and work in the Viennese district of Simmering. While the number of industry and trade in the former workers’ district is steadily decreasing and being replaced by monofunctional residential construction and space-intensive retail, conflicts arise between new and old neighbors and uses. The film explores the question, what does that mean for a city like Vienna and for Simmering as a former workers’ district?
The filmmaker will be present for a discussion after the screening!
