The first Interventa Hallstatt will take place in 2024, focusing on the relationship between tradition and innovation in the Salzkammergut. This genre- and generation-spanning symposium, which will be held biennially, serves as a laboratory for the intersection of theory and practice, with the goal of fostering knowledge production and experimentation around the sociopolitical significance of “Baukultur”.
Navigating Tradition and Innovation
For four days, Interventa Hallstatt will explore how the region’s rich history and iconic landscape shape identity, architecture, and daily life. The symposium will raise critical questions about identity and living spaces, the balance between landscape and architecture, and the pressing issue of overtourism versus the potential for sustainable tourism. With the Salzkammergut’s cultural and natural heritage at stake, the event aims to promote a Baukultur of Tomorrow—a forward-looking culture of awareness that constantly adapts to new realities while respecting the environment and built heritage.
Interventa Hallstatt functions as an experimental think tank where participants examine how people build, use, and modernize spaces, as well as the art they create, the music they listen to, and the way they communicate, dress, and consume. These aspects of daily life are key to understanding and shaping the future of Baukultur and its societal impact.
Interventa Hallstatt will be a platform for dialogue and experimentation, providing new perspectives on how tradition and innovation can come together to create a sustainable and culturally sensitive future for the Salzkammergut and beyond.

Additionally, the Regional_Express, part of the Salzkammergut’s Kulturhauptstadt project, offers an audiovisual journey through time on the region’s railway. Passengers will experience a unique narrative, featuring conversations between the train, the mountains, and the legendary Traunsee Nixe, interwoven with interviews from local residents. This journey from the past to the future connects the landscape with the lives and stories of those who inhabit it.
