Towards Positive Energy Districts in Izmir Karşıyaka: PED-ACT Participatory Workshop

Posted on: 21st March 2024
The PED-ACT Project Partners are organizing a participatory workshop in Izmir’s Karşıyaka District.

Izmir, Turkey has a holds an important potential for clean energy transition, thanks to its advantageous location along the Aegean Sea in the Mediterranean region, abundant in solar, wind, and geothermal resources.

With municipal interest at both metropolitan and district levels, alongside significant academic support and developing private sector, Izmir is actively developing an ecosystem focused on energy efficiency and positive energy districts. This effort is crucial as Izmir faces energy consumption growth due to population increase, and economic expansion. In Izmir’s urban landscape, the challenge lies in transitioning towards positive energy districts amidst ongoing urban transformation.

Financed by the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Urban Europe framework, the PED-ACT project is a key part of this efforts. The project aims to improve the PED processes by automatically characterizing existing PEDs to create digital references for feasibility studies. It focuses on enhancing common database development and fostering collaborative co-learning and co-creation, which are essential for replication modeling.

On March 26, 2024, partners of the PED-ACT project, including Karşıyaka Municipality, Wonderland Platform for European Architecture, Izmir Institute of Technology, Demir Enerji and Middle East Technical University are organizing a participatory workshop. The goal is to promote the adoption of clean energy sources and facilitate a fairer transition to clean energy in Izmir through participatory approaches. This workshop aims to engage various local stakeholders in enriching the ecosystem, with a particular emphasis on facilitating the participation of disadvantaged communities in the energy transition.

Venue: Karşıyaka Municipality Havra Building.
