Regional_Express is an innovative project by Ella Raidel, Petra Ardai, and Marlene Rutzendorfer, combining a train journey with an immersive audiovisual and Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Set in the Salzkammergut, it offers passengers a unique way to experience the landscape and history of the region.
From January 20 to December 31, 2024, passengers traveling on the ÖBB Regional Express between Gmunden and Bad Aussee can access an audiovisual experience via their mobile phones using a QR code. This mobile experience is also available through the Kulturhauptstadt app, with additional screenings at the Genusslabor Bad Ischl.
SO FAR:
Opening Performance: January 20, 2024, at the Genusslabor Bad Ischl, featuring composer Sander Saarmets and Gemischter Chor Altmünster.
In August 2024, the project extended into Virtual Reality (VR) under the direction of filmmaker Ella Raidel. The Cine VR experience takes participants into caves, mines, and landscapes of the Salzkammergut, offering a 360-degree view of the region’s rich salt history. This VR journey can be viewed at special events, including a screening at the International Academy Traunkirchen on August 28, 2024.
COMING UP:
Curated tours will take place on September 22, October 13, and November 17, 2024, starting at Gmunden station. Each segment of the journey is designed to reflect the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless blend of reality and storytelling.
With contributions from artists, composers, and locals, Regional_Express offers an innovative way to experience the Salzkammergut’s past, present, and future, all while traveling through one of Austria’s most scenic train routes.
