NEWS from the advisory council for building culture

At the end of October (after almost two-year break), the first meeting of the second term of the Advisory Council for Building Culture was held under the new chairman Christian Kühn.

After a brief review of the emergence and the first term of the Advisory Board, in particular the topics
– Federal Building Culture Declaration
– Building Culture Report 2016/17 and
– Building Culture Convention in spring 2016
were in focus in the first session. On these issues, presentations and discussions have been incorporated by the Platform for Building Culture Policy (www.baukulturpolitik.at).

What’s going on in this topics:

1) Federal Building Culture Declaration
For this purpose an invitation to tender for the design and facilitation of the participation process and the drafting of the declaration is currently being conducted by the Federal Chancellery. At the end of January should be announced who professionally accompanies this process (which is then planned for about 12 months).

2) Building Culture Report
The editorial group of the Platform for Building Culture Policy, which has formed to offer advice for the content of the Building Culture Report III, has met in October. The results were presented in the first meeting of the Building Culture Advisory Council meeting and discussed under the following working title: “The public client as an engine of Building Culture“.
Next steps should be:
– Screening of the recommendations of the Building Culture Reports I and II (www.baukulturreport.at) using the scenario technique → identifying urgent areas.
– Considering the urgent areas of concrete action fields (such as housing and school construction,…) → comparison of nine country strategies.
– Preparation of solutions with model-like character.
In the Advisory Council a working group will be formed to accompany the process subsequently.

3) Building Culture Convention
For spring 2016 (date to be announced) a convention for building culture is being planned, in which attention should be drawn to the subject of building culture in the circle of politics and administration in combination with the professional public and the media. In addition to the professionals from the building culture scene as well as stakeholders from the construction and real estate industry, Minister Ostermayer and Minister Mitterlehner as well as the members of the parliamentary commissions for culture and building should be taking part.

The next meeting of the Advisory Council for Building Culture is to take place on 27 January 2016, the subject „standards“ will be one main topic. For this purpose, the current state in this field was investigated and interesting speakers have already been invited.
