Battle for the city

The fifth edition of the open air architecture film festival links current and historic struggles for cities worth living in, and the appropriate architecture. Starting on August 9, wonderland – platform for european architecture and Az W will present a rich and diverse program in cooperation with Vienna´s MuseumsQuartier.

With the title “Battle for the City” the Architektur.Film.Sommer makes a plea against architecture as a status symbol, appealing for inclusive development of the city as a habitat for all. What are the impacts of urban design projects from the post-war era on our cities? As a resident, how can you influence the development of the area around your home? Must urban development automatically involve moving people out of their homes? Vacant buildings, housing shortage and new nomads – how does all of this fit together?

A curation of documentaries, shorts, experimental films and animated movies, carefully selected from over 125 international submissions, are combined into a rich and diverse series of screenings taking place each and every Wednesday in August. They may give you answers to some of the questions above, or even bring up new questions. There will be plenty of space and time before and after the screenings to discuss the issues raised and eventually find new answers, or possibly even explore uncharted territories, which might serve as the foundation for our next screenings series. Please accept our invitation to these free screenings and enrich the discourse with your opinion or ideas.
